Allo Communications Internet Review 2023

Packages & Pricing | Modem & Router | Features | Customer Service | Final Recommendation

Allo Communications is a local fiber internet service provider offering its services to the states of Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky, with the most coverage in Indiana. As a local provider, their coverage area is small, but they seem to be one of the better ISPs available locally. Plus they are among only a few who offer true FTTH (fiber to the home) service instead of relying on hybrid coaxial solutions.

They offer speeds up to 1000Mbps for fair prices, with no hard data caps and very few additional fees to worry about, which makes them a good choice for anyone who lives in the area where their services are offered.

Packages and Pricing

Allo Communications offers you the choice of picking a pre-made popular package (each comes with 500Mbps internet speed), or between three “custom” packages that you build on your own which differ based on the speed you get with each.

Pre-Made Packages

These are the most popular choice as it allows you to easily select and bundle your services and include:

  • For $60 per month, you can get the basic package with 500Mbps fiber internet.
  • For $134 per month, you can add in TV and get 500Mbps fiber internet and 100+ TV channels.
  • For only $4 a month extra you can pay $138 per month, and get 500Mbps fiber internet, 100+ TV channels, and a fiber phone.

If none of these suit you, Allo Communications do offer more customization to mix and match which is unlike a lot of other providers. They give you the following:

The 20Mbps Package

Their entry-level package costs $45 per month giving you 20Mbps download and upload speeds. This package is best suited for smaller homes and condos where only a few devices will be connected or you have a minimal budget.

You can stream, download, and browse from a single or a few devices with ease, but the more devices you hook up on the network, the higher the chances they will have to compete over bandwidth usage.

The 1 GIG Package

At $89 per month this is the highest tier fiber speed package package Allo Communication offer. This is the type of package that will allow you to do heavy or resource intensive tasks like multiple 4K streamers at the same time, gamers, or those in a large household. Connect as many devices as you want, as this package is reserved for the heaviest of users with big data appetites.

Phone Plans

In addition to internet services, Allo Communications also offer phone services that cost $25 per month, or $20 per month if you choose to bundle it with internet services. Within this you get:

  • Unlimited calling
  • Free caller ID
  • Call waiting
  • Voicemail
  • Call forwarding
  • Robocall blocking

Plus they offer the following extras at these costs:

  • $3 per month for a battery backup to keep your phone going during power outages
  • $3 per month for getting an unlisted number
  • $10 per month for an additional phone line (perfect if you work from home)

TV Services

On top of these you can pick between two TV services: Basic or Locals.

In the Basic Package that costs $99 per month individually or $53 per month when bundled with the Internet packages, you will get:

  • 100 channels, which also includes all Locals package channels
  • A set top box
  • Whole Home HD equipment
  • Restart TV option, which enables you to rewind the last four hours of footage

In the Locals Package, which costs $38 per month you get less of a saving when bundled with the internet as it will still cost you $37. You will get 20 local channels, as well as a top box, Whole Home HD and DVR, and Restart TV.

You can also choose additional extras to expand your package like Works TV ($75 a month), Expanded TV ($13 a month), or Whole Home DVR ($15 a month) depending on your preferences and the channels you want to watch (see the whole channel lineup here)

Network Management and Performance

Allo Communications has one of the best performances and network management of all the internet service providers. They state there is no risk of congestion on their network at this time and that all their customers rarely use more than 50% of the bandwidth that’s available, even during peak times.

There are no data caps to worry about as long as you don’t do anything illegal, so it’s safe to say that P2P transfers might trigger their alarm. In such cases, they will contact you and ask that you stop.

With stable connections, no congestion, and peak speeds at all times, they can easily support any type of online activity, be it streaming, competitive gaming, or a smart home and surveillance setup with customers having very few complaints on the service.

Fees

If you are bundling up and choosing routers and other devices that you have to pay extra for, there will be some tax fees, usually in the $2 to $25 range.

There is NO activation or installation fee, which is refreshing, considering that most ISPs do. That said, you do have to pay a $150 security deposit for new customers so that you can confirm you can afford to pay the services. If you pay it prior to installation, it will be added to your account as part of the credit after a year of using the service.

There are a few ways you can waive this:

  • You can provide a copy of a bill from a similar provider so you can prove you pay bills on time.
  • Transfer your current phone line to Allo Communication as well.
  • Sign up for automatic payments.

Note: if you make a late payment, you will be charged a $5 late fee each time.

Allo Communications Modem & Router Review

When you order any Allo Communications internet package, you’ll have the option of choosing between two modem/router combos – the Allo GigaCenter Router and the Allo Blast.

The free option, the Allo GigaCenter Router, supports speeds of up to 1 Gig and allows you to connect up to 100+ devices. This option will be fully sufficient for most and it’s an added bonus that’s provided at no charge.

The second Modem/router option, the Allo Blast is for those that have a large home with dead-zones that might require larger wireless coverage. If you choose the Allo Blast, there will be a $5/month router fee added to your account.

Both of them can:

  • Transmit two active networks simultaneously – you can have both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks active. Use the 2.4GHz for devices that are farthest away from the router, as it has a better range, and the 5GHz for higher speeds on devices that are closer.
  • Use Smart Steering – As you move through the home, devices will automatically switch between frequency networks thanks to Smart Steering, making sure you get the most optimized signal and speed on each device.

You can also install the Allo SmartCare App that’s available on Google Play and the Apple App Store. The app allows you to manage the Wi-Fi network even if you’re not at home and change and control the Wi-Fi network, passwords, access, port settings, and restrictions.

An important point to note is that if you use the Allo Blast Modem, you won’t be able to choose a TV package, as it’s not compatible currently.

Features and Benefits

Allo Communications has quite a few benefits for their customers:

30-Day Money-Back Guarantee

You can test Allo’s services for 30 days, and if you’re not happy, you will get a full refund. Be aware, however, that the refund will first be applied in the form of credit that will then be used to cover any outstanding charges you might have. Whatever remains after that will be refunded to your bank account.

90 Days of Free Service

Allo Communications gives a unique offer to residential customers of Hastings, Nebraska in the form of free Allo services for 3 months. You can choose whether you want 3 free billing cycles of fiber internet, TV, or phone!

Moving Your Services is Free

If you’re moving into a new home that has Allo fiber services available, you don’t have to pay any moving fees. Allo Communications states that moving costs are free of charge because there is no logic in punishing their customers for choosing to stay with them when they are moving. If you’re not sure the new location has fiber, you can call their team on 866-481-2556 and they will check what’s available and schedule the move to handle it for you so you don’t have a gap of services when you get to your new home.

Free Email Address

You can get a free @allophone.com email address when you sign up for their services as part of the fiber internet offers.

Customer Service

Allo Communications has a rich online support base that covers topics on internet usage, an up-to-date channel guide, phone usage, TV usage, and account questions. Each section has step-by-step guides, troubleshooting, and their current features covered.

Ways to Save on Allo Communications

Bundle Up

In addition to internet services, Allo Communications also offers TV and phone services as part of its service lineup and popular packages designed to reduce the cost as you include more services. If you choose to bundle all services, you will get a discount on each. For the TV package, you can save up to $30 per month when bundling with the internet package, and for their Allo phone service, you will get a $5 per month discount.

Waive the Security Deposit

Every new customer has to pay a $150 security deposit, but it can be waived if you provide a phone, cable, or utility bill copy; authorize automatic monthly payments; or if you choose to move your current phone number to Allo. Fairly easy to do if you have good credit and well worth the savings.

Bundle Up

In addition to internet packages, Allo Communications also offers TV and phone services that, when bundled up, bring the whole price down considerably.

Move to Hastings, Nebraska

Although a little drastic, with Allo offering 3 months free services to residents it does make you think!

Our Recommendation – Allo Communications Internet

Allo Communications is one of the best ISPs you can get if you live in their service area. While the area is limited, they can’t be beaten on price, customer service, or packages. Plus you get the router included and no data caps, which compared to other ISPs is a great deal.

The best thing about them is that they regularly increase the speed of their packages because they have enough capacity on their network to do so, while the price of the package will stay the same. There aren’t many (if any) ISPs who will do this without charging you extra!
