What’s Included | Eligibility | Application Process | Low-Cost Computer | Final Recommendation
Internet Essentials is an internet adoption program by Comcast XFINITY for low-income families. It’s a well-rounded service that includes low-cost high-speed internet with included Wi-Fi, ability to purchase a low-cost computer, and access to a learning center! Let’s delve into more about it:
-
Pros:
- Affordable
- No credit checks
- Great upload and download speeds
- No installation, activation, or equipment rental fees
-
Cons
- Have to keep your account in good standing
- Enrollment is limited to a specific period
- Comcast might cease to provide the service in the area
What’s Included in Internet Essentials
The Internet Essentials program includes the following:
- Internet connection with up to 15 Mbps download speeds and up to 2 Mbps upload speed for just $9.95 per month.
- The Internet Essentials program also offers a one-time option to buy a computer for $150 plus any applicable taxes.
- Free training programs that help low-income residents get familiar with the internet basics. There are options to view as a web-based program or as a printed resource. Classroom-based programs are also available at no additional cost.
Fees and Additional Costs
- Eligible households do not pay any installation or activation fees.
- There are no equipment rental fees for internet service.
- The additional costs that users should be aware of are the applicable taxes on the monthly fee and computer.
- Note that the service only supports a single outlet. Users will be charged for any additional outlets, as well as any custom installations or other XFINITY services and service appointments.
Eligibility
Internet Essentials access is divided into the following sub-programs:
- Internet Essentials for Low-Income Families
- Internet Essentials Housing Assistance Program
- Internet Essentials Veterans Program
- Internet Essentials Senior Program
- Internet Essentials Community College Program (only for Illinois and Colorado)
*Currently, there is also a broadband access trial for Philadelphia residents who participate in federal assistance programs.
Eligibility factors that are common for each program include the following:
- Residents have to reside in areas where Comcast offers their Internet services.
- They should not have any overdue Comcast bills outstanding for 12 months.
- They should not have any unreturned pieces of equipment outstanding for 12 months.
- Comcast decides when there will be enrollment periods for each year.
Further documentation depends on the program that residents want to enroll in. Here’s a list of documentation required per program:
- Low-Income Families applicants: Proof that at least one child is eligible for the National School Lunch Program. The status will have to be confirmed each year while using the program benefits.
- Housing Assistance applicants: Documentation that proves they are participating in public housing.
- A residential lease agreement, rent statement, or rent letter is required and accepted. It should be from the previous or current year.
- The name and address should be clearly visible.
- It should also have the Housing Authority that provides the benefits.
- Veteran Program applicants: Documentation that verifies the veteran status, as well as a receipt of qualifying state and/or federal assistance on an annual basis.
- Senior Program applicants: Proof the applicant is 62 years or over, as well as proof that they receive federal and/or state public assistance.
- Community College applicants: Proof of enrollment in a community college in Illinois or Colorado, or proof of Pell Grant.
- Philadelphia applicants: Proof they live in the city of Philadelphia and participate in federal assistance programs.
Comcast Internet Essentials Application Process
It’s very easy to apply to the program thanks to the application form available on the website. The web application process is simple and straightforward and you can apply in four simple steps:
- Basic Information – Here, you’ll have to give your full name, address, and phone number.
- Personal Details – You’ll need to provide your birth date, social security number, where you heard about Internet Essentials, and promo codes. If you don’t have a social security number, they offer alternatives: you can take a picture of yourself holding your ID or bring your ID to an XFINITY store nearby.
- Essentials Steps – Choose the Internet Essentials Program you wish to enroll in and upload any documentation that is required.
- Review and Confirmation – After you have reviewed all your information and uploaded the documents, you can send your application.
If you need any further assistance, you can call their customer support on 1-855-846-8376. This number can also be used to check eligibility via phone.
Once you complete the application, you will have to wait for the review to complete.
● Participants can be auto-approved, which means they won’t have to provide any additional documentation and will be approved within 5 business days.
● Those who need to provide documentation will be approved within 7 to 10 business days.
Approved Users Receive the Welcome Kit
After applicants are approved, they will receive a Welcome Kit and all the equipment within 7 to 10 business days.
The Welcome Kit is delivered directly to the mail and includes instructions on how to set up the wireless gateway and activate it, and how to set up the account.
Once the gateway is turned on and connected to the computer, users will get prompted to activate the gateway as soon as they open an internet browser. The activation process takes about 10 minutes. After that, the user will be prompted to set up their username, password, and security question. With this, they are all set to use Internet Essentials.
Getting the Low-Cost Computer
Applicants who are approved for the Internet Essentials Program can buy an Internet Essentials–approved computer from CDI Computers. The approved computers are available as a one-time offer per household. Users can choose between laptops or personal computers with an LCD monitor.
The minimum requirements that are guaranteed for the devices include:
- Intel Duo Core 2 (desktops) or Intel Core i3 (laptops)
- 4GB of RAM
- 120GB HDD
- DVD-drive (optional for laptops)
- Keyboard
- Trackpad or mouse
- Wi-Fi (laptop only)
- 17″ LCD screen (desktop) or 12″ screen (laptops)
- Windows 10 OS
- MS Office
- Norton Security
Users should know that the devices they get are refurbished devices. This means they were already used but were tested by the manufacturer and any faulty parts were replaced.
The Internet Essentials–approved refurbished devices come with a 90-day warranty and free tech support that covers any defects caused by materials or workmanship, but wear and tear or natural disaster damages are not covered.
The Learning Center Option
All Internet Essential users get free access to the Essentials Learning Center that covers everything they need to use the web in a secure and responsible manner. The lessons are easily skimmable presentations, articles, or videos.
They start with internet basics like choosing your browser, using social media platforms, or setting up a free email.
Users who already know the basics can learn new things about online safety and security. The section about avoiding scams, parenting tips, and dealing with abusive behavior (cyberbullying) is particularly good for new users.
Other resources focus on education and finance, as well as continuing education.
Our Recommendation
Comcast XFINITY Internet Essentials program is a great option for low-income users who are receiving some type of public assistance that is supported by the program. In addition to providing them with fairly good upload and download speeds, users are also eligible for a low-cost computer and have access to the Internet Essentials Learning Center.
This is by far the best bonus in the whole package. The huge repository of resources can help users get started and help them learn how to further their career and education. This sets them up for more career opportunities and a healthier and wealthier life.

I applied for internet essentials a wwek ago. I have spent more than 6 hours on the phone with them trying to iron out the appñication process. I ended up going to the library to use their internet to send documents proving my disability and my eligibility. After sending the Email, I received an email confirming the reception of the documents I sent.
I waited 72 hours as they recommended.
I called them and they said they had not received my Email. I went back to the library and re sent the documents with the subject header that they recommended. This time, I received no confirmation reply. I called them back after 48 hours as they recommended.
They again said they hadnt received my email. They said it takes 24 hours. I waired 48 hours and called them. I dont believe anything will come of this except maybe identity theft. I am shopping for another cut rate internet provider. I absolutely do not recommend Internet Essentials.

This is a joke! I called several times. They keep telling me they are sending me an application to sign and it never arrives. I also tried to get them to send me info and an application sent to my email and that never arrives. I even went to the Comcast office to get help and they refur me back to were I started. I’m throwing in the towel and contacting the Better Business bureau. I don’t think this is real.

I filled out application online and uploaded documents showing that I received government assistance. They sent me a letter stating I needed to sign and upload more documents but I went online and checked and I was approved for internet essentials. I actually thought it would honestly take longer as things do for discounted products. They usually make me work for it. Only hiccup I encountered was receiving my start up kit i waited a week they could not track it and found that they had an open order but they did not send kit so they gave me the option of waiting for a kit or having a technician come install it for me for free. As of today I now have affordable wifi ( with great connection) in my home and I couldn’t be happier and more appreciative.

I couldn’t thank internet essentials enough. It was a smooth and stress free application. I applied and got everything set up free within 10 days.
I thought it was all a joke when i got approved and asked to pick a date for installation, and the technician arrived at the estimated time and date. The internet has good speed.
Thank you so much for my kids so happy.🖒

I have no complaints, I am very happy with the entire process from the application, customer service, to the installation, and now with the service provided. I was shocked when I saw this service being provided. I expected to see much slower speeds and and a very low amount of data being offered. After researching, I found both the speed and the amount of data offered were both exceptional, equivalent to what someone not on the the program would expect to pay closer to $75 and up, as well as additional bs fees and taxes Comcast is notorious for as well other miscellaneous charges. With this program it is exactly as they promised, free equipment, free installation, and no hidden charges. They state the service is $9.95 + tax but after having it 3 months I have only received bills due for $9.95 which is great but as well have no problem paying a couple bucks for the taxes (probably a total bill of 11 and change is my guess) Anyhow, for me, I applied online (easily) took a photo of my ID, ebt card, and uploaded it with the application. I instantly received an email stating it would be reviewed. Within a couple days I received a letter in the mail stating something in the area of either providing additional information, or it was possibly to submit some type of documentation (I don’t recall) anyhow, I hadn’t yet and I’d say within a day or 2 I received another email stating I was approved and to fill out how/where I would like the equipment sent to, the option to pick it up in the store (both for self installation) or to have a technician come out and install it. I originally chose to pick up in the store, went to the store, after waiting almost over an hour without being helped yet, I walked out without the equipment. I called Comcast whom transfered me to the internet essentials dept whom was extremely kind and helpful. They then recommended I schedule a tech to come with equipment and install (both free of charge) being as the home I live in had previous had Comcast, and still wired but it had been over 2 years and technology and updates may affect my overall service. Well I did schedule an appointment, was given a date (which was 2 days later) and a 2 hour time frame from 1-3 (on a Sat) The tech showed up at exactly 1pm, and again, was extremely kind and very helpful. He had reworked the wiring, got everything setup and working in less then 15 mins. After researching regarding the amount of data provided, it’s 1 terabyte. From what I’ve read is that a typical person basically will never come close to using that much in a month. I believe it equals around 700+ movies being streamed in a month! I am a family of 3, have constant online activity, stream TV/movies daily and have never came close. One terabyte equals 1024 GB, I am at the end of my service month and am at 73 GB. The speed, phenomenal, it truly couldn’t possibly be any quick than it is. So will all that said, I can not speak any higher regarding the customer service, service provided (for that fee as well, is incredible) and my overall experience with the program. I am thoroughly satisfied, and greatful I have this available to me. To the people that had issues, I recently heard AT&T has also just started a similar program. Personally I do not care for AT&T internet as well as I believe it’s a lower amount of data and speed. But if having no success with Xfinity, there is another option to look into

Internet essential is a phony ad. They don’t have it. We tried to apply for it. We qualified for it. Then they said your address did not have PRE-EXIsting connection. Then they CANNOT offer this service. The matter of the truth is, the connection was there. So we ended up paying their regular rate of $44.99 and get it activated. So Comcast internet essential is cheating and phony.

My experience from applying for program, getting welcome kit explaining step by how to install in minutes has offered my household more than it was even essentially designed to provide a household. It was only available to low income families with school age children so students could access the internet from home. Saving trips to the library or going to someone who had internet plus you’d have to hope a computer was available. This program has covered every aspect by not only providing affordable internet they throw in a fully loaded laptop or desktop for $150. I am very grateful for this program. Thank you Comcast

An update: I was told by xfinity that since there isn’t current cable service to our building, that would have to be run first before we could get internet essentials. As I have been upset at their lack of service during my previous 6 calls today, they have noted that I have ‘yelled at them ‘. Although Concast will no longer teturn my calls, I am planning to take their hardware back to hammond.
In short, Internet essentials is nothing more than a scam to take advantage of us I have recently filed a complaint with the Indiana attorney General’s office to look into this

I have read all the comments and I have to say there are several pissed off people that couldn’t get the service because of technical issues or improper documentation. This service is not a scam and everything will go smoothly if you have proper documentation and your building or home is wired for the service. Remember guys, your area has to be service by Comcast. If they don’t provided services to your area, yes, you will not get the service.
My application took a week to get approved. I applied online. The installation kit came a week later. I had to get Comcast technician to come to my home to terminate the wire into my home. I called them Sunday night and got through first try. They sent a technician out the next day as scheduled all at no charge. Great service. I had Verizon and they were terrible.

I ordered one since April 1 and after one month of waiting I received damage not working PC and I think is used not refurbished as they said. I called them and they said they will replace it soon. I regret all this waiting time for a PC that I can buy with a same price at another store with fast delivery. So dont waist your time and money for nothing.

I spent 3 hours on the phone getting sent back and forth from CDI computer company to Comcast. The desk top computer does not have WiFi. The Ethernet cable does come with computer. So they lied you can’t just plug it in and it’s ready to go. It’s a $30 restocking fee to send it back and you have to pay for shipping. So it’s either send it back and pay for nothing or purchase a wifi antenna USB or a cable. Worst experience ever.

Please do not apply more than once using the same address!!!!
I am having hell to pay for this mistake. I’ve always qualified because Im low income but I thought it twas better to maintain my status as a loyal customer for their regular service, also we could we able to get by even with high cost. But now my husband has been laid off due to COVID and we can’t afford it. Yet I did apply essentials over a year ago just to see if I really get approved even with having service and to see if I could try and cut the bill and save us some money then. BIG MISTAKE!!!!
It said I was approved but I never followed up with it stayed with my high speed-high cost service instead, we cut cost elsewhere. Fast forward a year later I’ve cancelled all services and my husband would apply instead of me. Now they say “duplicate address/ location on file and it must be resolved”. When I check online of that old application it says “ I’m sorry, can’t save unfinished applications for more than 90 days, and your application time has lapsed. Please call for help“. How can you have a duplicate location situation if y’all didn’t saved it? Right now we have no xfinity services at all for over a week now. I owe them nothing. They keep saying it’ll take 7-10 businesses days to get resolved but won’t give me the date of when they actually opened a ticket for resolution.
Customer service is trash too especially if you ask for a supervisor. Never before have I been asked from Comcast have I been told “why do I need a supervisor they’ll just tell you the same thing” !!! And if you persist they quietly hang up. In my opinion this is SAD attempt on Comcast part to fool customers like me to keep paying the high cost of regular service or else no service at all.
7 years I was a customer paid on time and never any service interruption due to non payment. They should be ashamed of themselves.
Please do not apply more than once using the same address!!!!

I’ve had Internet Essentials through Comcast/Xfinity for nearly a year now, and I couldn’t be more pleased.
The application process was quick & simple.
I received a couple conflicting text updates during the 72-hr approval window, but one quick phone call was all it took to get clarification.
I was approved almost immediately and the equipment arrived shortly thereafter.
We were up and running in a matter of days!
The internet speed is fast, and we’ve never experienced any issues. We stream videos and games on several devices at once (FireStick, XBox, PC, and our smartphones), and everything has always worked better than expected.
Having access to hotspots while away from home has been extremely useful.
Lastly, Xfinity customer service has been able to resolve any issues I’ve contacted them about. There is room for improvement here as far as communication and initiative go, but problems *do* get solved and questions *do* get answered in one phone call. I just prefer more thorough answers or reasons for things as opposed to a simple “OK, we took care of that for you…” So perhaps I’m a bit more particular in this area than others might be.
All things considered, I would definitely recommend Internet Essentials to anybody looking for low-cost internet service. (I’ve had my mother & grandmother sign up, so that’s got to tell you something!)
My next order of business with Internet Essentials will be ordering one of their low-cost laptops. ($149 is a great deal!) Hopefully, it’s just as good as their internet is. Fingers crossed!

I am waiting for my Essentials package to arrive. I was reading through all the reviews listed above – both good and bad – and I have two things to comment on. (1) For those of you who have no grasp on proper writing/sentence structure, for those of you who can’t spell worth SHIT, and for those of you who are writing reviews with no concept of using proper grammar…my advice to you would be to use the Internet and all of its resources to improve your language skills! Your basic spelling and grammar has the tone of someone who never got past the fourth grade level. Instead of watching movies, do something educational with your gift from Comcast. (2) Be grateful, for God’s sake. There are people out there who are paying anything from $49.00 to $75.00 per month to have what is being given to you for ‘pennies’. And instead of whining about being “low-income”—maybe quit smoking those cigarettes that put you back $50-70 per WEEK for a carton. Buy your kids some healthy food.

I have had nothing but trouble with this internet provider. I have had shorty internet connection randomly 2-3 times a week that can last from 1hr to 2 days. I have been on the phone with costumer service multiple times. Each time they go through the same long processes of troubleshooting that I have already done prior to calling. I have also used the chat method within the app. Nothing good comes from either. Was told that I would be sent a new router which never came. I have also been told that a technician would be sent out to fix my problems. That didn’t happen either. This has been the worst company I have ever dealt with for my internet service.

The process is very frustrating and you cannot get someone on the phone to answer questions. This is terrible specially now a days when having internet is a necessity. Shame on you Comcast!

I applied, got approved and have had no problems. I really appreciate this service and all of it’s benefits. Having internet that’s not on a phone is essential. thanks Comcast!

Horrible customer service under any circumstances. I recently went to a local store and was told that I should transfer my service to their Internet Essentials program because I meet the criteria. and even if I don’t meet the criteria with covid-19 they are allowing exceptions. having been a customer for over 20 years, I am being told I cannot have service. I meet all the criteria except being an existing customer. They show no loyalty towards their established people, but are willing to take a chance for others. They clearly are not customer service oriented because of this behaviour as well as the lousy customer contact centers.

I bought an Internet Essentials refurbished laptop from CDI. When it arrived it looked as though they had simply dug it out of the trash. I requested a shipping label to send it back which I did. I had to contact them again to ship my replacement. When the second one arrived it looked worse than the first! I had to pay for the shipping back and a $30.00 restocking fee. DO NOT ORDER A REFURBISHED LAPTOP FROM INTERNET ESSENTIALS. They are to refurbished “back to new” like CDI’s website suggests.

I signed up for this and got it hooked up quickly but I thought it is supposed to be $10 a month. My bills have been over $35 every month and it’s making me mad. They added a streaming program to it (streampix) for an extra $10 a month and I didn’t even want that. It says it’s included but then why am I getting charged for it. I would really like these questions answered, it’s not okay to advertise this and then it not be the truth! NOT HAPPY

Although Xfinity says it is – installation is NOT included. If equipment they hand you does not work, you have to pay for internet service every month any way, and then Xfinity will charge you for the non-working equipment.
Since June, I have been paying for a service I do not receive and now Xfinity demands I pay them for “old equipment” I do not have – they e-mail, text me, and call my house – getting increasingly aggressive and threatening.
I’m concerned that Xfinity’s dishonesty, incompetence, and greed will affect my credit rating.

Xfinity Comcast bills me every month – since JUNE – even though they know the wiring coming into my apartment is not connected to the Comcast feed, so I cannot receive their internet service.
XFinity Comcast Mr. Tom Karinshak, Exec VP / Chief Customer Experience Officer has refused – time and time again for the past two+ months – to send someone over to connect the wiring and issue me a refund for all of the months I have been paying for internet service I am not connected to.
I’m keep paying – like I did again today – because I am concerned if I don’t – that Xfinity’s dishonesty, incompetence, and greed will affect my credit rating.

My daughter called to get service from xfinity letting them know she was low income and they put her on a regular plan. The next several months she called inquiring about the bill being high when she thought it was supposed to be cheap. No one ever fixed the problem! Even after eight phone calls & probably 20 hours on the phone they refused to put her on the essentials program even though she can easily verify being on state assistance programs. Their customer service never properly assisted her, many times even transferring her to tech support, and has been told unless she cancels her service for 90 days and has no internet she cannot have internet service. So she has to pay $49 instead of $9.98!!!!! ABSOLUTELY REDICULOUS!!!
